November 05, 2014, Athens, - Intracom Telecom, a global telecommunications system vendor, announced today the successful deployment of StreetNode, its small-cell backhaul platform, for a live small cell field trial being undertaken by Telefonica UK, one of the largest mobile telecommunications providers in the United Kingdom and part of Telefonica Group.
The trial took place in Newark-on-Trent in one of the busiest industrial parks in the East Midlands region of the UK. The StreetNode solution was tested in a live small-cell network and the platform’s software defined operation allowed activation and reconfiguration in the field in Point-to-Point (PtP) and Point-to-MultiPoint (PtMP) mode demonstrating unparalleled flexibility. Telefonica UK were assessing ease of deployment and the capability of the system to support live traffic from the latest generation of small cells.
The trial successfully proved that a street lighting contractor who had received minimal training could install and commission a StreetNode unit quickly and easily, assisted greatly by the unique auto-alignment feature of StreetNode. The deployment was conveniently monitored locally by use of apps running on Android Smartphones which connected through Bluetooth with the StreetNode. The system was remotely managed via Telefonica UK’s Network Management Centre using Intracom Telecom’s flexible management platform, uni|MS. Live traffic was successfully carried with 100% availability through the trial period.
Mr. Steve Brown, Small Cells Trials Manager for Telefonica UK, said: "This was an ideal opportunity to trial the Intracom Telecom StreetNode product for the first time on our live UK mobile network. The units were physically deployed in under 30 minutes at each location and performed well in a challenging environment."
"This was a great opportunity to trial our StreetNode with Telefonica UK. StreetNode allows operators to deploy street level backhauling by reusing licensed MW frequencies", stated Mr. John Tenidis, Marketing Head for Intracom Telecom's wireless solutions portfolio. "By combining carrier grade features with intelligent auto-alignment and zero touch commissioning we have developed the most advanced system for street level connectivity," , he added.
Intracom Telecom innovates in the field of Small-Cell Backhaul featuring its SON-capable StreetNode platform which is designed to implement any type of network architecture through software-defined radio operation. The platform’s highly-compact form factor together with street friendly aesthetics, allow the platform to blend invisibly with street level furniture. Streetnode is available now in licensed frequency bands 26/28/32/42 GHz.
